Before you call a professional cleaning company, you can try your own spot cleaning with some of these spot cleaning tips.
Our first spot cleaning tip is for carpet. Carpet is quick to absorb stains, and sometimes it doesn’t give them up easily. One of the best, and most natural, ways to clean up carpet spots is with white vinegar and water. If your carpet is synthetic, use a ratio of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. So you could use ½ cup of vinegar mixed with 1 cup of water. If your carpet is made with natural fibers, your ratio will be 1:1. Apply your mixture onto a white rag and dab at the stain until it is removed. It is recommended that you test your solution on an inconspicuous area of carpet before moving on to the stain to make sure that no discoloration occurs.
If you have some upholstered furniture that needs spot cleaning, you will first need to determine what type of upholstery it is. (And just like with the carpet, always test an inconspicuous spot first.)
- Fabric. This mixture will require ¼ cup white vinegar, ¾ cup warm water, and ½ cup natural liquid soap (such as Castile). Add mixture to a spray bottle and mist the area lightly. With a soft cloth, gently scrub in a circular motion. Repeat until the area is clean. Air dry.
- Leather. In a spray bottle, combine ½ cup olive oil and ¼ cup white vinegar. Shake the bottle until thoroughly mixed. Mist lightly and scrub with a soft cloth in a circular motion. Repeat until the area is clean and allow to air dry.
- Synthetic. Mix together ½ cup white vinegar and 1 cup warm water. Add to a spray bottle and mist the area thoroughly. Use a soft cloth to scrub the area in a circular motion. Repeat until the area is clean and allow to air dry.
