Conventional commercial carpet cleaning products are literally a cocktail of synthetic, noxious chemicals. One, known in the industry as ‘perc’ (perchloroethylene), is a dry cleaning additive that can cause nausea, fatigue and dizziness if inhaled or ingested.
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has also linked perc to liver and kidney damage. Naphthalene, another chemical, is a solvent made from coal tar, which the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) considers a possible carcinogen. Plus it is toxic to the central nervous system.
When applied during the cleaning process, these chemicals become airborne, so they can be inhaled by your customers and staff. In addition to being on-site health risks, they can pollute groundwater if not disposed of properly – for example, down a drain. Wastewater from traditional commercial carpet cleaning methods requires filtration and/or treatment in order to neutralize contaminants.
Fortunately, there is a growing awareness about the health risks associated with commercial carpet cleaning. Hence, a new breed of professionals has come to the fore and is now using more natural solutions instead of dangerous chemicals. Some of the new, eco-friendly solutions used by these green professionals are plant based, not chemical based.
Red flag! If a cleaning business can’t tell you that they use environmentally friendly products, start looking elsewhere.
