Having a spill on the floor is annoying, but with some advice from the CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute), it can be removed before it leaves a permanent mark. So, here’s some info to help you deal properly with carpet spot removal and keep it clean for years to come.
- Act Fast! Today, most new carpets have stain-resistant properties, so carpet spot removal should be easy if prompt action is taken. The longer the delay, there’s more likelihood that the stain will become permanent. Remember that no carpet is 100% stain proof.
- Don’t Scrub! Scrubbing causes distortion of the pile in the affected area. Until the area is completely dry, use paper towels or a dry cloth. Semi-solids should be gently scraped up with a spoon. Solids must be broken up, and then vacuumed.
- Pretest any carpet spot removal solution in an unnoticeable area to make sure it won’t damage the dye or fiber. After applying several drops to the test area, hold a clean white cloth over it for about 10 seconds, then check the cloth and carpet for color change, color transfer, or damage to the carpet. If there is a change, try another ‘green cleaning’ solution.
- Put a small amount of the solution on a white cloth and apply to the stained area. Gently work it in and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. When the spill has gone completely, rinse the area thoroughly with cold water and blot dry with a cloth.
